'KEENE, N.H. 02/20/06 - Four Keene State College athletes were honored by the Little East Conference on Monday. Sean Sullivan and Tyler Kathan were named men's basketball Co-Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, while Breanne Lucey earned track athlete of the week accolades. Sarah Begnoche was named to the women's basketball honor roll.
Sharing the Player of the Week honor with Western Connecticut State University's Greg Cole, Sullivan averaged 19.0 points and 5.0 rebounds to help KSC to a 2-0 week. The senior forward from Athol, Mass. scored a season-high 28 points and grabbed five boards to lead the Owls past the University of Southern Maine (68-66) in their regular season finale on Saturday. Earlier in the week, he had 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists in KSC's 65-58 victory over Plymouth State University. It is his first appearance as Player of the Week this season.
Kathan, a freshman forward from Ludlow, Vt., earned his fourth Rookie of the Week nod this season after averaging 20.5 points, on 64 percent shooting, and 7.0 rebounds in a pair of wins for the Owls. He had a 14 point, six rebound performance against Southern Maine, and tallied 27 points and eight rebounds earlier in the week against Plymouth State.
A native of Keene, N.H., Lucey competed at both the Little East/Alliance Indoor Track Championships and the New England Division III Track Championships last week. The senior runner took first in both the 600 (1:36.29) and 1,000 (2:59.76) meter races, and helped the 4x400 meter relay team place first in a time of 4:12.35 at the Alliance meet. At the New England's, Lucey finished fourth in a pair of events - the 800 meters (2:16.20) and the mile (5:02.38).
In a 1-1 week for the Owl's, Begnoche averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. The junior forward from Millville, Mass. tallied 17 points and nine rebounds in a 71-54 victory over Plymouth State University, but was held to just six points and six boards in a regular season finale loss to Southern Maine on Saturday.
The Little East regular season champions and top-seed in the upcoming LEC tournament, the KSC men's basketball team will host eighth seed Southern Maine in an opening round game on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.). Seeded fourth in the tournament, the Owl women's basketball squad will host fifth seed Plymouth State University in a first-round game the same day at 5:30 p.m. The Keene State indoor track team will travel to Boston University on Friday (1 p.m.) for the New England Division I Track Championships.
