First half surge leads Owls over Corsairs on Senior Day 17-8
KEENE, N.H. 4/21/13 – The Keene State College women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 13-5 halftime lead and never looked back, defeating UMass-Dartmouth 17-8 in a Little East Conference game on Senior Day at Owl Athletic Complex on Sunday.
Freshman Kaitlin Nolan (Mahopac, N.Y.) scored four goals and sophomore Polly Grey (Saratoga, N.Y.) tallied three times to lead the Owls (8-6, 3-2 LEC), who have won six of their last seven games. UMass-Dartmouth (7-7, 0-4 LEC) has dropped two of its last three games.
Falling behind 1-0, Keene State scored the next five goals to take a 5-1 lead. Senior Lauren Brown (Agawam, Mas.) netted two of the Owls first five goals.
After UMD cut the lead to 5-3, the Owls went on a scoring spree, netting eight straight goals to make it a 13-3 game. Nolan scored back-to-back goals in the offensive explosion.
The Corsairs opened the second half with a goal, but KSC put the game away by scoring four more times to take a commanding 17-6 lead.
Senior Nicole Curry (Hampstead, N.H.), sophomore Christa Demovellan (Westwood, Mass.) and junior Eliza Witherbee (Newburyport, Mass.) each found the back of the net twice while senior Lindsay McManus (Dover, N.H.) also scored for the Owls. Demovellan dished out four assists.
Junior Taylor Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) lead UMD with four goals and two assists.
Senior Christine Collins (Cheshire Conn.) finished the game with three saves for the Owls. Senior Angelina Donovan (Medford, Mass.) stopped 14 shots for the Corsairs.
KSC outshot UMD 35-12 and had the upper hand in draw controls 16-9. In addition to her goals, Nolan had four draw controls and two ground balls.
Seniors Kristen Schmidt (Pleasantville, N.Y.),Collins, McManus, Curry, and Brown were honored prior to the game.
Keene State is at Roger Williams University on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
